Summer Solstice Shawl

Solstice Swells is an elongated crescent shaped shawl designed to be knit with a 21, 20g mini-skein fingering-weight set or scraps from other projects and one 100g skein.

Spending time on the water is my favorite part of summer and was the inspiration behind Solstice Swells. The waves and garter rows represent ripples on the water created by a gentle summer breeze. I imagine wearing it while on a boat or while walking along a shoreline.

Growing up, my Grandparents lived on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Because of this, I have had the privilege of spending many summer days on Quitsa Pond in Chilmark or winter strolls through Edgartown. It has always been my happy place, my place of calm. No matter what is going on in my life, crossing Vineyard Sound on the ferry puts me at ease. The smell of the cold, salt water is like a balm to my soul. Solstice Swells is a tribute to healing powers of the Ocean.

Solstice Swells is designed to be knit one color a day but can absolutely be knit at your own pace. If you are choosing to knit one color a day starting June first, use the time leading up to the beginning of the month to knit the set-up and increase section that creates the crescent shape of the shawl, this will be done with the 100g skein.
